Best Age Spots Treatment
Ok, so what are is the ‘best’ treatment option for my age spots?
Well, that is going to depend on several factors.
These include: how widespread and dark or established are your spots? Where do you spots appear? Do you continue to have prolonged exposure to sunlight? Do you protect your skin with an spf sunscreen? What are the original cause of your sun spots (hormonal? e.g. pregnancy or menopause, or are you taking a medication or oral contraceptive that is making your skin more susceptible to hyper pigmentation, increased melanin production or melasma.
Laser Treatments
One of the popular, yet relatively expensive, options available to age spot sufferers are the various laser treatments available at many of the dermatologists’ offices these days.
While laser treatments hold out the promise of age spot removal for those that have tried other less expensive, less painful, less traumatic, and less disruptive solutions and not had success, they aren’t generally recommended as a first stop in the treatment regimen.
The reason? age spot removal with lasers can be expensive, demand multiple visits to fully diminish the appearance of dark spots on the face, hands, neck, shoulders, chest or other sun exposed areas, and there is no guarantee they will work. For these reasons, people usually turn to lasers when they can afford some time out of public light for recuperation, money is no obstacle, and other treatment options have failed them. So what are some of these other treatment options?
Chemical Peels
While some of the older chemical peels could be quite caustic and damaging to the skin, some of the newer peels can work to peel away dead, old, discolored, skin tissue, and rejuvenate the skin to regrow healthy, normal, clearer looking skin. Paradoxically, the trauma induced by the chemical peel is said to stimulate the growth of new younger looking skin. All this does not come without a price of course. Chemical peels, depending on the mix are still best done by a licensed esthetician, cosmetologist, dermatologist or other licensed professional and can demand some down time for recuperation before you will be looking and feeling your best.
Topical Creams and Ointments
Topical creams and ointments have long been a favorite treatment for age spots. Unfortunately, while topical, especially those sold over the counter, offer the promise of a low cost, unintrusive, pain free solution to the problem, they also have a long history of delivering disappointing or fleeting results.
